Top Leader of NSCN(K) Arrested for Manipur Ambush in Which 18 Armymen Died

New Delhi:  A top leader of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang or NSCN(K) has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency for his alleged involvement in an ambush in which 18 Army personnel were killed in Manipur on the Indo-Myanmar border earlier this month.

Khumlo Abi Anal, a regional commander of the NSCN(K), was arrested from Chandel district of Manipur, the Press Trust of India has reported.

In the worst such attack in two decades, militants had ambushed a military convoy on June 4 in Chandel killing 18 army personnel and injuring 11 others.

After the ambush, the Indian Army carried out a surgical strike inside Myanmar, reportedly killing about 50 militants of the groups believed to be responsible for the deadly attack in Manipur.

Mi-17 helicopters of the Air Force were deployed and, sources said, the Assam Rifles and the Army’s Special Forces – 21 Para (SF) – carried out surgical strikes inside Myanmar, where the militants had fled to, entering about 2 km into the neighbouring country, something that was not confirmed by the Army.

Sources said the operations took place in Ukhrul, Manipur, and in Tuensang district of Nagaland, where a mixed group of militants attempted to infiltrate into India.

Militants belonging to People’s Liberation Army (PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) have been killed.
