Uber Names Amit Jain as President of India Operations

New Delhi: US-based taxi hailing app Uber has appointed Amit Jain as president of its India operations.

“In this role, Amit will be running all business strategy, operations, and growth in a market of global strategic importance for Uber,” the company said in a statement.

Prior to this, Mr Jain was president of Rent.com, a technology company in the US dedicated to giving renters a free and convenient way to find a perfect place to live.

“His experience as an operator, building and scaling world-class teams will be invaluable as we enter the next phase of Uber India’s growth. Success in India is a global priority for us, and I know Amit’s leadership and passion for Uber’s mission will be transformational as we redefine urban mobility for hundreds of millions of Indians,” Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said.

Uber was launched in India 19 months ago and now the country is Uber’s largest market outside the United States and also the fastest growing, it said.

“In India, Uber is helping create tens of thousands of new jobs, empowering drivers with higher earnings potential and flexible working hours, and providing millions of consumers with a safe, reliable and convenient mode of transport,” Mr Jain said.

Recently, the government has asked internet service providers to block websites of app-based taxi operators such as Uber, TaxiForSure and Ola cabs.

All app-based cab services were banned in the national capital last year after a driver of Uber was allegedly accused of raping a female passenger.

Mr Jain is a B. Tech (computer science and engineering) graduate from IIT, Delhi (1994- batch), according to his LinkedIn profile.

Rain on the Cards in North India, South Burns

New Delhi:  North India is likely to get a respite from the torrid heat today – rain and summer storms are on the cards. But the monsoon, which was to reach Kerala yesterday, is likely to play truant for a few more days.

The scorching heat wave continued down south, with Andhra Pradesh, the state worst hit witnessing over 40 more deaths. The total number of deaths in the state and neighbouring Telangana, has crossed 2,200.  Besides, nearly 100 deaths were recorded in Odisha and over 70 in Gujarat. Even in Delhi, two persons died.

But Delhi, NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, northern Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh are in for a wet spell.

“Many parts of Northern India will experience thunderstorm in the next three days due to western disturbances,” said BP Yadav, Director, Indian Meteorological disturbances.

The Met office has also predicted light rain and thundershowers at one or two places in south Odisha, besides Angul, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar districts. There will be strong and gusty surface winds along coastal Odisha.

Heat wave continued unabated in Rajasthan with parts of the desert state recording temperatures of 44 degrees Celsius and above. Kota remained the hottest place recording a maximum of 45 degree Celsius.

The monsoon was expected to hit the Kerala coast by May 30, but not weather officials say there is no hope of it before June 4-5.

DMK, Other Groups Hold Protest

Chennai:  The derecognition of a student association at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, is turning political in Tamil Nadu, with students’ wing of the DMK and some other groups holding a protest in Chennai today.

The protest is being held outside the IIT building, located in south Chennai. A protest was held in the area on Saturday too, following which over 100 students were detained.

Last week, IIT Madras temporarily derecognised the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle – a group of around 20 students — for allegedly violating of guidelines of the institute. The institute’s Director, K Ramamurthy, said the group had been using IIT’s name without permission.

But students claim they’ve been targeted for criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre’s policies.

The controversy has even reached the Centre with the Congress accusing Human Resources Development minister Smriti Irani of playing a role in the ban and bullying academic institutions.

Ms Irani has emphatically denied it, saying the IITs are autonomous institutes.

Sources said the IIT had received a note from the HRD ministry, which mentioned an anonymous letter accusing the students’ body of “creating hatred among students in the name of caste” and trying to “create hatred against the honourable Prime Minister and the Hindus.”

The anonymous letter also enclosed a pamphlet of the study circle highlighting a speech by academician R Vivekananda Gopal which was critical of the Narendra Modi government.

The weatherman has predicted partly cloudy skies, along with the possibility of dust storms and thunderstorms accompanied by squall in some parts of the city.

“The skies will be partly cloudy. Dust storms and chunderstorms accompanied by squall may occur in some parts of the city,” said the weatherman.

Telangana TDP Legislator Revanth Reddy Trapped While Allegedly Offering Bribe, 3 Arrested

Hyderabad:  Revanth Reddy, a lawmaker of Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party smiled and was greeted enthusiastically by party colleagues as he entered the Telangana Assembly today to vote in elections to the state’s legislative council.

A short while earlier, a Hyderabad court remanded Mr Reddy in judicial custody for 14 days, allowing him to vote. Mr Reddy was arrested on Sunday after allegedly being caught trying to bribe a fellow MLA to vote for his party’s nominee in today’s election.

Two other people, including a Bishop, Harry Sebastian, and a man called Uday Simha have been arrested.

The anti-corruption branch or ACB of Telangana police said it laid a trap for Mr Reddy based on a written complaint from nominated MLA Elvis Stephenson, who represents the Anglo-Indian community in the Telangana Assembly and alleged that he was offered Rs 5 crore” and a ticket to leave the country or to vote in favour of TDP.”

The ACB said it has “collected clinching evidence in the form of audio/video recording and has also recovered the entire advance amount of Rs. 50 lakhs offered to Sri Elvis Stephenson.”

In a video recording, Mr Reddy is purportedly seen sitting at Mr Stephenson’s Secunderabad residence and talking, while Uday Simha extracts cash out of a bag. Also on tape is the Bishop, who is alleged to have contacted Mr Stephenson on behalf of Mr Reddy.

In more embarrassment for the TDP, Mr Reddy talks about “boss,” which political rivals allege is a reference to party chief and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu.

The TDP says Mr Reddy is the victim of a giant conspiracy hatched by ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samithi or TRS of K Chadrashekara Rao, also known as KCR. Revanth Reddy said as he was arrested and taken away, “I am not daunted even if they put 100 cases. I will fight conspiracy by KCR. I did not bring any money.”

Elections are being held for six legislative councilor upper house seats today. The TRS will comfortably win four. The TDP and Congress hoped to win one seat each, but the TRS has made it a contest by filing nominations for five seats.

World Milk Day: Raw Milk Versus Pasteurized Milk, Which One Should You Pick?

World Milk Day: Raw Milk Versus Pasteurized Milk, Which One Should You Pick?

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that dairy milk is an important part of everyday diet for most people. Making the children have a glass of milk daily is an age-old custom that is prevalent in many households across the country. This is because milk plays an integral role in a child’s overall development. Even for adults, regular intake of milk is considered to be of utmost importance for ensuring healthy bones as well as strong teeth.

(Do You Really Need to Drink Milk?)

Milk is one of the richest sources of calcium. Adequate level of calcium in the body wards off bone related ailments like osteoporosis, bone injuries and others. Many researches suggest that calcium when coupled with Vitamin D can not only benefit bones and teeth but can also protect against cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Calcium, Vitamin D and iron are some of the most important nutrients for women, especially those nearing their menopause.

(Can Drinking Too Much Milk Harm You?)

Regular milk consumption has also been linked to muscle growth, repair and strength. It is also enriched with choline and potassium.

With the many benefits of milk listed above, let us now talk about the types of milk that are available in the market. There has also been an ongoing debate over the benefits as well as disadvantages of raw milk consumption. In India, it has been a tradition to use raw milk for generations wherein the milk is boiled before consumption. But is it really safe to consume it that way?

(Formula Milk vs Breast Milk: Which One is Better for Your Baby?)

I come from a small town in Uttar Pradesh where most people in our neighborhood would get up early in the morning and get fresh, raw milk from the local doodhwalla. In our house, a person would come early in the morning with a huge container filled with raw milk. He would measure the milk with a beaker, pour it in another vessel and hand it over to my mother. My mother would then boil the milk for quite some time, then let it cool before refrigerating it. She believed that though raw milk is highly nutritious, it contains certain bacteria that may be harmful for us.

I don’t really remember when my family ditched the local doodhwalla but there came a time when we started picking pasteurized milk instead.

(How Good is Milk for Us? A Look at the Science)

Raw cow’s milk

As the name suggests, raw milk is cow’s milk in its most natural form. Honestly, my family used to consume raw milk (boiled) till almost a decade back and we never complained of any sickness or ailments. I once tried consuming raw milk – straight from what the milkman had got us – and ended up with an upset stomach and of course, my mom’s thrashing.

(Does Your Daily Diet Include Calcium Rich Food?)

Raw milk doesn’t enjoy good faith from many around the world, however those who are staunch believers of its goodness, swear by its health benefiting properties and like to consume it as is. According to many raw milk enthusiasts, pasteurization or cooking raw milk kills some very important and nutritive properties of milk. It also takes away its freshness and gives it a cooked flavour. Raw milk is also believed to be a source of Vitamin C which is lost after it is pasteurized or cooked.

(Why free-range milk is good for you)

Despite this, unfortunately, there have been more instances and studies done in the recent past enumerating why one should skip consuming milk straight from the nature’s bounty. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United States (CDC), “Raw milk and products made from it (including soft cheese, ice cream, and yogurt) can pose severe health risks. That’s because raw milk has not undergone a process called pasteurization that kills disease-causing germs, such as Campylobacter, E. coli, and Salmonella.”

Experts believe that bacteria like E.coli – essentially found in cow’s waste – can easily mix with milk. If cows are not cleaned properly, the remnants of waste can make its way to the freshly collected milk. The bacteria can then multiply and can cause serious harm if one consumes the same milk.

(Goat’s Milk Ice Cream | Meet the Producer)

According to Dr. Sunil Sharma, general physician and head of emergency, Madan Mohan Malviya Hopspital, New Delhi, raw milk should never be consumed. It may lead to infections and serious health issues. “We have come across cases of brucellosis in past which is triggered primarily because of indigestion of raw/unpasteurized milk or undercooked meat from infected animals. I would say it is always better to stick to pasteurized milk and be safe as raw milk consumption may also trigger milk-borne pathogen infections.”

What is pasteurization?

Pasteurization is a process which is undertaken by dairy companies that sell pasteurized milk in packets or tetra packs. The process involves heating milk at a particular temperature for a stipulated time to ensure killing of harmful bacteria that can cause severe damage to human health. It has three variants –

– Milk is heated for at least thirty minutes at 145 degree Fahrenheit.

– High Temperature Short Term Pasteurization (HTST) which involves heating milk for 15 seconds at 161.1 Fahrenheit.

– Ultra Heat Treat, wherein milk is heated to 280 degree Fahrenheit for 2 seconds

(India May Soon Package and Sell Camel Milk!)

The U.S FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that “pasteurization does not reduce milk’s nutritional value.” CDC does acknowledge the fact that pasteurization inactivates certain enzymes and reduces few vitamins like Vitamin C, however it does argue that “milk is not a major source of Vitamin C” in the U.S. diet.

(How Milk Can Benefit Your Brain & Boost Memory)

Is raw milk really bad?

In simpler words, milk in its natural form – straight from the cow – has characteristics to get contaminated quite quickly. As explained above, even the slightest amount of carelessness during milking the cow can lead to milk contamination which if consumed can prove to be quite fatal for health. This is one of the reasons why pasteurized milk is preferred over raw milk.  As far as United States is concerned, raw milk is a serious topic of debate. Most states have enforced a strict ban on the selling and distribution of raw milk.

(Milking It: Israel Leads the Way in Dairy Tech)

So, if raw milk is not desirable for consumption, is boiling an option? Is it then at par with the pasteurized versions sold by the leading dairy brands? Scientifically and technically, properly cooked food items are deemed fit for human consumption. The same is true with raw milk as well. It is only now that I understand why my mother would let the milk boil for a long time and emphasis on reheating whenever possible.

“I have had boiled raw milk all my life until I moved to Delhi and started consuming pasteurized milk. Boiling certainly lessens any chances of bacteria’s presence in milk, however, pasteurized is better if you want to be 100% sure, ” said Dr. Sharma.

On the other hand, a Delhi-based weight management expert, Dr. Gargi Sharma, strictly recommends not considering raw milk consumption. According to her, “Our lifestyle is such that we are now more prone to getting affected by bacterial and viral infections. One should not try risking oneself by drinking raw milk. Even after boiling, you can’t rely on it being absolutely safe for consumption.” She pointed out the fact that everyone can’t handle raw milk, especially those with weaker immunity. Its consumption may therefore cause more trouble than any good. “I would certainly not recommend it to young kids, older people as well as pregnant women, ” concluded Dr. Gargi.

Gone are those days when you could imagine cows grazing in lush greens and be assured of getting milk from healthy, well-fed animals. In a century where most things are being found adulterated or with excess of harmful chemicals, pesticides and what not, how can you trust your local doodhwallas with the safety standards? Isn’t it better to rely on products that are under national food security standards and are duly tested for their quality?

It is just an observation, a question that crosses my mind more often now.

Decision Likely Today on Key Appointments at Meeting Chaired by PM

New Delhi:  A meeting of a panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been called today to decide on the chiefs of Central Information Commission (CIC) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

Today’s meeting has been convened at the Prime Minister’s residence and will be attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh, official sources have confirmed. The last meeting of the panel held in New Dellhi on May 23 had remained inconclusive. The names for the post of information commissioners in CIC and vigilance commissioners in CVC are also likely to be finalised in today’s meeting, say sources.

Earlier this month, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party vice president Rahul Gandhi had questioned the delay in appointments of chiefs of CIC, CVC and Lokpal by the Narendra Modi government.

Many RTI activists have also questioned the delay in appointments.

The CIC, which is mandated to resolve appeals and complaints filed against government departments or public authorities by information seekers under the Right to Information or RTI Act, has been working without a chief for over nine months, after the tenure of CIC Rajiv Mathur ended on August 22, 2014. Three posts of information commissioners in the CIC also lie vacant.

Sources said there are 203 applicants, including all seven information commissioners, for the post of the Chief Information Commissioner and 553 for the post of information commissioners.

Under the RTI Act, the CIC has one chief and 10 information commissioners.

In CVC, the term of Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar had ended on September 28 last year, while vigilance commissioner J M Garg completed his tenure on September 7.

Sources said that the government has received about 130 applications for the two posts.

Pakistan Violates Ceasefire Twice in Jammu and Kashmir"s Poonch

Jammu:  Pakistani troops today violated the ceasefire by firing with automatic weapons and Rocket Projectile Grenades on forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Pakistani troops fired upon forward posts in Krishna Ghati sector at 0005 hours, PRO Defence Lt Col Manish Mehta said.

Troops guarding the borderline did not retaliate, he said.

The firing continued till 0030 hours, he said, adding there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the cross-border firing.

Pakistani troops again resorted to firing with automatic weapons and RPGs for a brief period around 0600 hours today, he said, adding there was no retaliation from this side but a high degree of alert was maintained.

TDP Legislator Trapped While Allegedly Offering Bribe, 3 Arrested

Hyderabad:  In massive embarrassment for Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party, one of its lawmakers in Telangana, Revanth Reddy, was arrested on Sunday after allegedly being caught trying to bribe a fellow MLA to vote for his party’s nominee in elections to the legislative council today.

Mr Reddy, and two other people arrested – including a Bishop who allegedly first contacted the nominated MLA Elvis Stephenson on the TDP legislator’s behalf – will be produced in a Hyderabad court today.

The anti-corruption branch or ACB of Telangana police said it laid a trap based on the written complaint of Mr Stephenson.

“The complaint was verified carefully and after satisfying that preliminary evidence existed to proceed further, DSP ACB City Range-I, Hyderabad went ahead and collected clinching evidence in the form of audio/video recording and has also recovered the entire advance amount of Rs 50 lakh offered to Sri Elvis Stephenson,” the ACB said.

Mr Stephenson, who represents the Anglo-Indian community in the Telangana Assembly, has alleged that he was offered Rs 5 crore and a ticket to leave the country or to vote in favour of TDP, the bureau said.

Mr Reddy was arrested at Mr Stephenson’s Secunderabad home, where ACB personnel were waiting for him when he arrived and was allegedly about to hand over the Rs 50 lakh in cash.

Elections will be held for six legislative council seats today. The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi or TRS of K Chadrashekara Rao, which had won 70 plus seats in the 119-member Telangana assembly last year, will comfortably win four seats. The TDP and Congress hoped to win one seat each, but the TRS has made it a contest by filing nominations for five seats.

The TDP has alleged that the TRS has been aggressively encouraging crossovers from other parties, even offering a minister’s post to a lawmaker elected on a TDP ticket, to get that fifth seat in the upper house.

It also alleges that Revanth Reddy has been framed in a huge conspiracy hatched by the TRS ahead of today’s election.  As he was arrested and taken away, Mr Reddy said, “I am not daunted even if they put 100 cases. I will fight conspiracy by KCR. I did not bring any money,” he said.

DMK, Other Groups Plan Major Protest Today

Mystery Recycler of Rare Apple 1 Computer Has $100,000 Cheque Awaiting Her

A $100,000 (roughly Rs. 63 lakhs) cheque is waiting for a mystery woman who donated a rare Apple 1 computer to a Silicon Valley recycling firm.

CleanBayArea in Milpitas, California, is trying to track down a woman in her 60s who dropped off some electronic goods in April, when she was cleaning out the garage after her husband died.

In one of the boxes, buried under worthless keyboards, personal computer pieces and wires, was a 1976 Apple 1, a groundbreaking home computer. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak designed and hand-built the computers and sold them for $666.66 (roughly Rs. 42,500) each. Only a few dozen are known still to exist.

The recycling firm sold the Apple 1 for $200,000 (roughly Rs. 1.2 crores) in a private auction. Its policy is to split the proceeds 50-50 with the person who donated the equipment.

“The body was made out of wood. I’ve never seen anything like that. My first reaction was it was a fake. Then we started looking at it,” said Victor Gichun, vice president of marketing for CleanBayArea.

Gichun declined to say who bought the Apple 1, only that it was a private collector. He’s not sure whether the Apple 1 is still operational.

He said he will recognize the woman, who he believes is local, when he sees her and will write her out a check for $100,000.

The boxes sat in the company’s warehouse on a pallet for a couple of weeks because they didn’t expect to find anything valuable, Gichun said.

Blues Legend BB King Laid to Rest After Final Farewell in Mississippi

Family members of the late legendary Blues singer and guitarist BB King came together at his funeral service at Bell Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Indianola, Mississippi, a town he considered his home.

Mr King, who influenced generations of singers and guitarists, died at the age of 89 on May 14 at his residence here.

At the ceremony, which took place on Saturday, relatives, friends and Mississippi’s governor Phil Bryant were among the guests who mourned Mr King ahead of his final resting place at the BB King Museum in his beloved Indianola, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson read a letter from US President Barack Obama at the funeral.

“The blues has lost its king and American has lost a legend. No one worked harder than BB. No one did more to spread the gospel of the blues. He gets stuck in your head, he gets you moving, he gets you doing the things you probably shouldn’t do – but will always be glad you did.

“BB may be gone but that thrill will be with us forever. There’s going to be one killer blues session in heaven tonight,” Mr Obama wrote in the letter.

Born in Mississippi, BB King began performing in the 1940s. He went on to influence a generation of musicians, working with Eric Clapton and U2.

Once considered the third greatest guitarist of all time, Mr King was awarded his 15th Grammy award in 2009 for his album One Kind Favour.

The entertainer is survived by 11 children, from different partners, and around 40 grandchildren, according to his eldest daughter Shirley King, 65, also a musician.

No Talks Till Pakistan Takes Action Against Terrorists Like Lakhvi, Says Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi:  A dialogue with Pakistan is possible only in a peaceful atmosphere and this can be achieved only when the neighbouring country takes action against the people involved in terror activities in India, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today.

Addressing the media on the first anniversary of the Narendra Modi government, Ms Swaraj said India has adhered to three principles regarding Pakistan. “We will try and solve every issue through talks, talks will be only between the two nations without any third party intervention and the talks will be held only in an environment free of terror,” she said.

“As said earlier, our dialogue with Pakistan will only materialize in a peaceful milieu. This zone will be created only when Pakistan takes action against the (terror) perpetrators like Lakhvi  and others,” she added.

Since last year, Pakistan has taken an aggressive stance. While ceasefire violations became the norm in Jammu and Kashmir, repeatedly attempts were made to raise the Kashmir issue in the international fora.

Not only did Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif demand a resolution at the UN General Assembly in September, he also wrote to UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon, asking for intervention.

The frost in ties had thawed for a while during the SAARC summit in Nepal. But a chill descended during US President Barack Obama’s visit in January this year, when Pakistan insisted that Mr Obama should “take up the issue” of the violence at the border “in which many innocent Pakistanis and Kashmiris have been martyred.”

The bitterness increased when Pakistan released 26/11 terror accused Zaki-Ur Rehman Lakhvi from jail. Last week, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said “If Pakistan wants its own welfare… It must stop all its nefarious activities aimed towards India.”

Regarding China, Ms Swaraj said India has clarified on oil search in south China sea. The issue of China’s giving stapled visas to residents of Arunachal Pradesh is also to be resolved, and India hopes to sort out both matters through talks. “China and India are both committed to resolve the contentious issues between them.”

Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha Dubsmash Famous Karan Arjun Dialogue in Hilarious Video

Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha have taken their dubsmash craze to a whole new level by re-creating a famous scene from Karan Arjun, the tale of revenge and reincarnation that starred Salman and Shah Rukh Khan as brothers who are murdered and reborn.

Congress Ready to Back Nitish Kumar for Bihar"s Top Job: Sources to NDTV

Patna:  The Congress will back Nitish Kumar as the candidate for the chief minister’s post in the Assembly Elections in Bihar, which will be held later this year, sources told NDTV.

“If Lalu and Nitish are not able to secure the alliance and the Congress has to choose between two, this time it is keen to go with Nitish,” said a senior leader of Congress.

The decision was made on Saturday after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with Bihar Congress President Ashok Choudhary.

The Congress has been supporting the state’s JD(U) government since Mr Kumar parted company with the BJP in June 2013.

Its current decision comes as the ambitious plans of putting up a united front by the three splinter groups of the Janata Parivar fell flat and a rift surfaced between the RJD and JD(U) over the state’s top job.

On Thursday, after a week of hints, Mr Prasad’s RJD finally commented that Mr Kumar could not be the Chief Ministerial candidate of an alliance “that includes us”.

With the BJP talking to former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi – whom the JD(U) has expelled after his rebellion – both Congress and the JD(U) are seen as facing a disadvantage. Mr Manjhi commands a huge following among the Mahadalits, a chunk of the poorest voters, which will supplement the BJP’s upper caste votebank in case he joins the party.

But now that Mr Prasad has indicated that he is all for a tough negotiation, the Congress, the leader said, wants the two socialist chiefs to expedite the alliance talks and clear the confusion.

Rs 2 Lakh Penalty for Not Answering Tax Authorities" Queries

New Delhi:  Failure to answer questions from the tax department can entail a penalty of up to Rs two lakh from the next financial year under the new black money law, which has got the assent of the President.

The Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015 provides for a minimum penalty of Rs 50,000.

Besides, tax authorities would be able to send summons or notices via electronic mails (emails) and fax to seek information from those under probe for suspected black money stashed abroad.

The Act got the President’s assent on Tuesday and will come into force from April 1, 2016.

The new law, which has provisions to deal with the problem of the undisclosed foreign income and assets, was passed in the Rajya Sabha on May 13, two days after it got the Lok Sabha approval.

A person shall be liable to a penalty if he/she has, without reasonable cause, failed to answer any question put to him, by a tax authority in the exercise of its powers, the Act says.

The penalty will be imposed if he/she fails to sign any statement made by him in the course of any proceedings which a tax authority may legally require him to sign and also for their failure to attend or produce books of account or documents called in response to summons issued to him.

The penalty “shall not be less than fifty thousand rupees but which may extend to two lakh rupees”, it said.

The service of any notice, summons, requisition, order or any other communication may be made by delivering or transmitting a copy to a person by post or by such courier service as may be approved by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

It can also be issued in the form of any electronic record and “by any other means of transmission of documents, including fax message or electronic mail message, as may be prescribed”.

The CBDT may make rules providing for the addresses including the address for electronic mail or electronic mail message to which the communication may be delivered or transmitted to a person, as per the Act.

Paris: Rafael Nadal believes his record of nine French Open titles can be beaten, even if fellow Roland Garros legend Gustavo Kuerten believes it may take an extra-terrestial to do it.

“Nine in ten years. I’m sure it will never happen again. It’s impossible,” said triple champion Kuerten.

“Rafa…he’s not from this world.”

But Nadal, who stayed on course for a 10th title on Saturday when he swept into the fourth round, insists that his record is far from secure.

“First of all, I am from this planet, I think,” smiled Nadal.

“Second thing, thanks to Guga for the words. Third thing, it’s true that it is probably a tough record to beat. But at the same time, I tell you one thing: If I did it, somebody else can do it.”

IIT Madras Issued Notice by Scheduled Castes Panel Over Banning Students" Group

New Delhi:  The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has sent a notice to IIT Madras over the de-recognition of a students’ group – several of whose members are from the Dalit community – allegedly after an anonymous complaint that it was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Confirming the move while speaking to PTI today, the Chairman of the panel, PL Punia said they have sought a reply from the institute.

“Youngsters must get freedom of speech on campuses. Extending bans thus is like suppressing their voices. This is completely wrong.

“I have issued a notice to the institute and sought its reply after taking note of the incident myself. We will take action in this regard,” Mr Punia said.

He further accused the Centre of being “insensitive” towards the marginalised sections and claimed that the number of anti-Dalit incidents had increased ever since the Modi government came to power.

“Such incidents have increased. These are not minor incidents, but serious ones,” said Mr Punia, who is a Congress MP in Rajya Sabha.

Referring to a clash earlier this month in Nagaur district in Rajasthan in which four persons were killed and seven others injured, Mr Punia claimed that the local administration had not taken the issue seriously until he visited the spot.

“The district magistrate concerned had not visited the spot. When I visited the spot three days after the incident, only then did the DM accompany me.

“This shows that the people in the government don’t take such incidents seriously, likewise the lower rank officials,” he said.

He urged Dalit organisations to come together against such incidents and added that the Scheduled Castes panel, the National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for Women need to look into these incidents.

He also expressed concern over the NDA government slashing budgetary allocations for scheduled castes and minorities.

The ‘Ambedkar Periyar Students Circle’ at IIT-Madras was “de-recognised” following allegations that it was spreading “hatred” against the Prime Minister.

In his address last month, the PM spoke at length on the devastating earthquake in Nepal that claimed nearly 9,000 lives. In India, where tremors were felt were felt across Northern and Eastern India, over 60 people died in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh that border Nepal.

“I did not feel like conducting the Mann ki Baat today. I felt anguished… it appears as if a series of national disasters have started,” Mr Modi had said at the outset.

In his earlier programmes, the Prime Minister has spoken on a range of issues including his ambitious Swacch Bharat or Clean India campaign, promotion of khadi, skill development, scholarship for disabled children, infrastructure for educational institutions, the menace of drugs and issues related to farmers.

Pakistan Cricket Board Upset With Information Minister"s Comments on Blast

Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) hierarchy is not happy with the timing of the disclosure made by Federal Minister for Information, Pervez Rasheed about an alleged foiled suicide bomb attack near the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore on Friday night.

Rasheed told Geo News channel that due to the bravery and vigilance of the policemen on duty, the suicide bomber failed to penetrate the security cordon around the stadium where the second one-day international was taking place between Pakistan and Zimbabwe. (Zimbabwe to Continue Tour Despite Suicide Bomb)

According to the minister, the attempted attack was foiled outside the outer security cordon and a kilometer away from the stadium. He said the blast killed two persons including a police official.

Rasheed’s disclosure caused embarrassment for not only the PCB but also the senior police officials who after the blasts had said they occurred due to an explosion in a power transformer close to the stadium.

Later, a police spokesman said the blast occurred due to an explosion of a gas cylinder of a rickshaw near Kalma chowk. He said originally it was thought that the rickshaw had explosives fitted in it but investigations had shown it was a gas cylinder blast.

The Pakistani media also perhaps realising the sensitivity of the moment didn’t give much coverage to the incident and played up the police version until Rasheed spoke about it.

“It is so embarrassing and we fear now that all the hard work we put into making this tour possible could go waste. As the timing of the minister’s statement was not right we wanted to talk about it after the Zimbabwe cricket team returned home on Monday,” a reliable source in the board said. He said PCB Chairman, Shaharyar Khan and senior member Najam Sethi had both been in touch with government officials on the incident that continued to cause confusion as the police till late night were sticking to their version of the blasts.

The PCB after much difficulty had managed to convince the Zimbabwe cricket team to tour Pakistan. They are the first Test side to come to the country since 2009.

“The Chairman had a long talk with the Zimbabwe team management and assured them everything was under control and the security being provided to them was top notch,” the source said.

The Zimbabwe management announced it would continue with the tour and play the third and final one-dayer on schedule on Sunday.

But the source said after the incident, security had been further stepped up with around 4,000 policemen guarding the stadium itself, and a further 2,000 along the route from the Zimbabwe team hotel to the venue.

A PCB spokesman confirmed to PTI that after the blast, steps were taken not to cause panic. “The blasts were heard and word spread around but the people who came to watch the match remained orderly and there was no incident,” Agha Akbar said.

“The main thing is that the Zimbabwe team is continuing the tour and will play the last ODI as planned on Sunday,” he said.

Akbar said the tickets for the match were sold out as were the first four games of the tour. “They were scheduled to go shopping (Saturday) which they did and the foreign broadcasters including some Indians showed remarkable spirit,” he said.

Uttarakhand Collects Maggi Noodle Samples From Plant, Cities

Dehradun:  Amid reports of alleged higher level of lead in Nestle’s Maggi noodles, Uttrakhand Food Safety Department has collected samples of the noodle brand from the company’s plant at Pantnagar in the state.

Besides this, the state government officials have also collected samples of the Maggi noodles from other cities, including Dehradun.

“A team comprises of state Food Safety Department officials visited the Nestle’s plant at Pantnagar and collected the eight samples of Maggi noodles, which were sent to the state government laboratories,” District Magistrate of Udham Singh Nagar Pankaj Kumar Pandey told reporters in Dehradun.

Maggi noodles came under the scanner last month after the UP Food Safety and Drug Administration asked Nestle India to withdraw a batch of Maggi noodles “which were manufactured in February 2014″ after it found presence of non-essential taste enhancer MSG and high levels of lead in the samples.

Disputing the claim, Nestle India had said: “The company does not agree with the order and is filing the requisite representations with the authorities.”

Meanwhile, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has said the government has asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to look into the matter.

Besides, a class action suit can be initiated into the matter if a complaint with National Consumer Disputes

Redressal Commission (NCDRC) is filed, the Minister has said.

“It is a serious issue. We have referred the matter to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Under the current law, FSSAI has the power to take action, including imposing fine and hefty punishment,” Mr Paswan said.

Debate on Government"s Performance Good for Democracy: PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi:  Completing one year in office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the ‘manthan’ (debate) about the performance of his government is good for democracy as it would help him know what was “lacking”.

During his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme, he said that the entire nation has conducted analysis of the first year of his government and there has been “criticism” even while “many gave distinction to us”.

“In a democracy, this ‘manthan’ (debate) is necessary. Views, for and against, are important. It is very essential to know what was lacking. The good things have their own benefits,” he said.

During his radio broadcast he specially mentioned three social security schemes — PM Insurance Scheme, the Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Atal Pension Scheme, for the benefit of the poor.

He said these schemes had become a hit within 20 days as 8.52 crore people had enrolled for them.

“I feel for the poor… These schemes are a very important step for social security… These will ensure that the poor are not dependent on anybody and are empowered,” PM Modi said.

“I want to create an army from among the poor to fight poverty and defeat it, so that the burden of poverty that the nation is carrying for years is removed. For ridding the nation of poverty, we will continue to make efforts and succeed,” he said.

Talking about the newly launched ‘Kisan TV channel’, the Prime Minister said it will help the farmers as well as fishermen to learn the best practices and improve productivity.

In this context, he emphasised the need for better nurturing of milk-bearing animals to improve production as he observed that India was far behind in terms of milk production per animal. He pressed for use of technology in this regard.

Income Tax Forms Simplified, Date for Filing Returns Extended

New Delhi: The Finance Ministry on Sunday came out with new three-page income tax return (ITR) forms, dropping the controversial provision for mandatory disclosure of foreign trips and dormant bank accounts, while it also extended the last date of filing to August 31, 2015.

The new forms – ITR 2 and ITR 2A – will have only three pages and other details will have to be filled in schedules, the ministry said in a statement.

A new form ITR 2A has been brought out by the Finance Ministry which can be filed by an individual or HUF (Hindu undivided family) who does not have capital gains, income from business/profession or foreign asset/foreign income.

The statement also said that the last date for submission of tax returns will be extended to August 31, 2015.

With regard to the controversial provision of disclosing details of foreign visits, the release said that the assesse will be required to disclose only the passport number.

“In lieu of foreign travel details, it is now proposed that only Passport Number, if available, would be required to be given in Forms ITR-2 and ITR-2A. Details of foreign trips or expenditure thereon are not required to be furnished,” it said.

Further, the ministry has done away with disclosure of details of dormant accounts which are not operational during the last three years.

“As regards bank account details in all these forms, only the IFS code, account number of all the current/savings account which are held at any time during the previous year will be required to be filled-up. The balance in accounts will not be required to be furnished,” the statement added.

The simplified I-T return forms are being brought after the earlier version was opposed by industry, members of Parliament and assessees for its cumbersome disclosure norms.

The salaried individuals and those persons who do not have business/professional income are required to file I-T returns in either ITR-1 or ITR-2 by July 31 every year.

Further, an individual who is not an Indian citizen and is in India on a business, employment or student visa (expatriate) would not mandatorily be required to report the foreign assets acquired by him/her during the previous years in which he was non-resident and if no income is derived from such assets during the relevant previous year, the statement said.

At present, individuals/HUFs having income from more than one house property and capital gains are required to file Form ITR-2.

Observing that a majority of individuals/HUFs who file the ITR-2 form do not have capital gains, the statement said, “With a view to provide for a simplified form for these individuals/HUFs, a new Form ITR 2A is proposed which can be filed by an individual or HUF who does not have capital gains, income from business/profession or foreign asset/foreign income.”

Individuals having exempt income without any ceiling (other than agricultural income exceeding Rs 5,000) can now file Form ITR 1 ‘Sahaj’. Similar simplification is also proposed for individuals/HUF in respect of Form ITR 4S (Sugam), it added.

It further said that as software for filing these forms was under preparation, the last date for submission of tax returns will be extended to August 31, 2015.

“As the software for these forms is under preparation, they are likely to be available for e-filing by third week of June. Accordingly, the time limit for filing these returns is also proposed to be extended up to August 31, 2015. A separate notification will be issued in this regard,” the release said.

Following the controversy over the ITR forms for assessment year 2015-16, which sought details of bank accounts and foreign visits, the revenue department had put them on hold.

The ITR forms, which was notified last month by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) for the current assessment year, had specific columns for banks accounts, IFSC codes, names of joint account holders and foreign visits, including the ones paid by companies.

Let me Know Your Travel Experiences, Says PM Modi on Mann ki Baat

New Delhi:  The hashtag #incredibleindia witnessed a sudden spurt in traffic today after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the people to share their experiences of travelling across India.

“During the holiday season many of you would have gone to places, many would be planning to do so now. Can you share your experiences with me? Do so using #IncredibleIndia. Share photos, your experiences etc,” PM Modi said. “I will share your experiences with others as well.”

The Prime Minister also asked the people to pen down their experiences. “I don’t know if you write a diary but you must write down your experiences,” he said. “One should keep a diary while travelling, for it is another side of education.”

Within minutes, the hashtag was filed with photographs taken at various corners of India, from Ladakh to Goa to Andamans.

Others hailed the initiative to popularize Incredible India, the government’s campaign to give a push to the tourism industry.

The Prime Minister also reminded people that June 21 was the International Yoga Day.

“Could you ever imagine that Yoga will connect the world in this manner?” He asked, mentioning how the idea had found support at the United Nations.

While releasing the logo of the International Yoga Day, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had called it a “world record”. The resolution was passed within 75 days and was co-sponsored by 177 countries – both a first.

Mobile Calls, Hotels to Get Costlier From Tomorrow as Service Tax Increased to 14 Per Cent

New Delhi:  People will have to shell out more from tomorrow while using mobiles, eating out and travelling as the service tax rate goes up to 14 per cent.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget had proposed to raise service tax from 12.36 per cent (including education cess) to 14 per cent. The proposal takes effect from June 1.

The tax is levied on all services, expect a small negative list.

Some of the key services that will attract higher tax and hence become costlier are: railways, airlines, banking, insurance, advertising, architecture, construction, credit cards, event management and tour operators.

Mobile operators and credit card companies have already started sending messages to subscribers conveying the increase in service tax rate which will have a bearing on the bills.

According to railway ministry officials, fares for First Class and AC classes in passenger trains, besides freight charges, will go up by 0.5 per cent from June 1.

“Currently, 3.7 per cent service tax is levied on train fares for AC Class, First Class and freight. This will go up to 4.2 per cent from June which means the rise is only 0.5 per cent,” the official said. Currently, there is abatement of 70 per cent on passenger services.

Jaitley had proposed to raise the service tax rate to 14 per cent to facilitate a smooth transition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, which the government wants to roll out from April 2016.

Once implemented, GST will subsume service tax, excise and other local levies.

“To facilitate a smooth transition to levy of tax on services by both the Centre and the States, it is proposed to increase the present rate of service tax plus education cesses from 12.36 per cent to a consolidated rate of 14 per cent,” Jaitley had said in Budget speech.

Education cess, which is levied on service tax, will be subsumed in the service tax rate with effect from June 1.

Although the Budget also proposed a 2 per cent Swachh Bharat cess on selected services, the government is yet to come out with a notification in this regard.

India at Early Stages of Recovery, Growth to Rise to 8%: Nomura

New Delhi: The Indian economy is in its initial stages of recovery, global brokerage firm Nomura has said. However, it also said GDP growth is expected to rise to 8 per cent this fiscal year as against 7.3 per cent in 2014-15.

According to Central Statistics Office (CSO) data, the Indian economy grew at 7.3 per cent in 2014-15, up from 6.9 per cent a year ago, mainly due to improvement in the manufacturing sector.

On GDP numbers, the Japanese brokerage house said one can paint both a bearish or bullish picture, but it’s in the “glass half-full camp”. “Despite the scepticism, we are optimistic and continue to believe that the Indian economy is at the initial stages of a business cycle recovery,” Nomura said in a research note, adding that lower inflation, easier financial conditions, policy efforts and rising profit margins are expected to back up a cyclical recovery.

Pegging the GDP growth at 8 per cent this fiscal year, Nomura said key risks to this assumption are a bad monsoon and weak global demand.

On policy rates, the report said, “We expect RBI to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25 per cent on June 2, in line with the consensus, followed by a pause until end-2016.”

The central bank has lowered its policy rate twice so far outside the cycle in 2015, but kept it unchanged at its last review on April 7 due to fears of unseasonal rains impacting food prices.

DMK Seeks PM Narendra Modi"s Intervention to Revoke IIT Madras" Ban on Student Group

Chennai:  Slamming IIT Madras for its decision to derecognise a students’ body for alleged violation of code of conduct, the DMK today sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “direct intervention” in revoking the order to ensure that “peace” returned in the premier technical institute.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi said that based on an “anonymous” letter, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry had “sidestepped natural justice” of seeking explanation from persons concerned and banned the group which amounts to “stifling” freedom of expression.

Without naming HRD Minister Smriti Irani, Mr Karunanidhi said that “unilateral” and “authoritarian” interference by PM Modi’s ministers on such issues will impact both the youth of the country and the nation’s peace.

“Though it seems that Prime Minister Modi doesn’t place importance on needless issues like banning a democratic group, his ministers interfering unilaterally and in an authoritarian manner in such issues will impede the youth’s thought process and affect the nation’s peace,” he said.

In a statement, the DMK chief called for the PM’s “direct intervention” to ensure that the derecognition of Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle by authorities at IIT Madras was revoked immediately to ensure that peace and a healthy atmosphere prevailed in the institute.

“Because of this incident, the otherwise peacefully functioning institute has turned into a war zone,” he said.

Mr Karunanidhi also asked if the AIADMK government, “by not making any explicit statement against the ban and remaining silent,” was supporting the Centre on the issue.

He said members of the derecognised Study Circle had claimed that they were working on progressive issues and those which affected the society.

He also recalled that his party founder, late CN Annadurai had, as early as in 1947, advocated for participation of students cutting across political lines to work for propagating rationalism.

IIT Madras had come under criticism on Friday for derecognising the students’ body for allegedly violating the code of conduct.

President Pranab Mukherjee Approves Land Ordinance Issued by Government for Third Time

New Delhi:  President Pranab Mukherjee has approved the land ordinance, which was cleared by the Cabinet yesterday for the third time after the government failed to convert it into law during the recently concluded Budget Session of Parliament.

The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had decided to re-issue the ordinance on Saturday, saying it was necessary for maintaining continuity and providing a framework to compensate people whose land is acquired.

The President has given assent for the re-issuing of the ordinance, official sources said in New Delhi on Sunday.

The ordinance has been issued for the third time and it is the 13th executive order of the NDA government since it came to power in May last year.

The measure was issued for the first time in December last year to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.

The ordinance was replaced by a bill.

While Lok Sabha has passed it with 10 official amendments, the government has not taken it to the Rajya Sabha as it lacks numbers there.

The ordinance was re-issued in March this year and was due to lapse on June 3. To re-issue the ordinance, the government had prorogued Rajya Sabha during the Budget Session.

An amended land acquisition bill is under consideration of a Joint Committee of Parliament.

Mobile, Hotel, Other Services to be Costlier From June 1

New Delhi: You will have to shell out more while using mobiles, eating out and travelling from Monday, June 1, as the service tax rate rises to 14 per cent.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget had proposed to raise service tax from 12.36 per cent (including education cess) to 14 per cent. The proposal takes effect from June 1.

The tax is levied on all services except a small negative list.

Some of the key services that will attract higher taxes and, hence, become costlier are railways, airlines, banking, insurance, advertising, architecture, construction, credit cards, event management and tour operators.

(Read more)

Mr Jaitley had proposed to raise the service tax rate to 14 per cent to facilitate a smooth transition to the GST or Goods and Services Tax regime, which the government wants to roll out from April, 2016.

Once implemented, GST will subsume service tax, excise and other local levies.

“To facilitate a smooth transition to levy of tax on services by both the Centre and the States, it is proposed to increase the present rate of service tax plus education cesses from 12.36 per cent to a consolidated rate of 14 per cent,” Mr Jaitley had said in Budget speech.

Education cess, which is levied on service tax, will be subsumed in the service tax rate with effect from June 1.

Although the Budget also proposed a 2 per cent ‘Swachh Bharat’ cess on selected services, the government is yet to come out with a notification in this regard.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Majahan Says Her Focus is Legislative Work

New Delhi:  Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who has been in the past accused of bias by Congress while conducting business of the House, today said her pitch for carrying out maximum legislative work could have been misconstrued by the opposition.

“Parliament is for enacting legislation. Government is interested that business is conducted and the House goes on… Opposition may think that I am helping the government, but it is not the case”, Ms Mahajan, who will be completing one year in office next month, told PTI.

Congress had earlier this month raised concern over the impartiality of the Chair in the Lok Sabha.

The charge came after Ms Mahajan had allowed Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal to make a statement on the cancellation of a food park in Amethi on May 12.

Congress members had questioned how the government was being allowed to speak on the same issue repeatedly, whereas their party’s requests for adjournment motions are rejected by the Speaker.

The 72-year-old presiding officer of the Lok Sabha said Parliament will function more meaningfully if MPs see themselves as lawmakers and not only representatives of their constituency and thus understand the larger responsibility bestowed on them by the nation.

‘Tai’, as the Speaker is affectionately called, is satisfied over the Lower House creating a record of passing the maximum number of legislations in recent times in her first year as the Presiding officer.

The preceding five years of the UPA-II had witnessed record disruptions in Parliament following opposition uproar over a range of issues and scandals.

“There have been many achievement, but they are not mine but the collective one with all sides cooperating”, she said.

Ms Mahajan has now plans to raise the level of the debate in the House through various means including by setting up a ‘support system’ that can help members to make a forceful and studied participation.

This, she said, is necessary at a time when the current Lok Sabha has record new members.

Through support system, the idea is that members could avail the services of experts and resource persons on the relevant subjects.

The Speaker said that she is getting letters and emails expressing satisfaction over the working of the Lok Sabha as also the way debates are being held.

In order to strike greater rapport with members, the Speaker has initiated a series of interactions with younger members seeking to understand their problems and concerns and to see how best they could carry out their responsibilities.

The Speaker said that in order to ensure greater participation of new members, she has resumed the practice of reading of urgent matters of importance through special mentions.

For several years, the special mentions were being laid on the table.

Her decision not to suspend the question hour has now been accepted by one and all as she has given an assurance that all those seeking such suspension would be given time in the zero hour to raise the issue concerned.

A virtually uninterrupted question hour has helped members seek the maximum information from government on diverse issues.
