Internet Mubarak, Say Online Portals in Jammu and Kashmir, as Ban is Lifted

Internet Mubarak, Say Online Portals in Jammu and Kashmir, as Ban is Lifted

The state government had banned Internet just before the Eid festival, fearing trouble over a court ordering the police to strictly enforce a beef ban.

Srinagar:  Internet is back in Jammu and Kashmir after a three day ban but people associated with online businesses say thousands have lost their livelihood.

Muheet Mehraj’s online shop Kashmirbox.com, which works with artisans, farmers and small time designers, is back in business but over 300 orders were lost.

“Our kind of a business is not something that you work for five days and have two days off. We are a 24×7 business. Our business is online and Internet is its blood and if you take the blood out of the venture, it simply dies and that’s what we have felt,” Mr Mehraj told NDTV.The state government had banned Internet just before the Eid festival, fearing trouble over a court ordering the police to strictly enforce a beef ban. The court ruling has triggered protests across the state and sources said the administration feared the use of social media and messaging to stir protests.

For online start-ups, the internet ban was devastating, that too right before Eid festivities.

Not surprisingly, when the ban was removed, many on social media wished each other “Internet Mubarak”.

“We deal with 3,000 orders daily but for the last three days we have not made any single transaction,” said Kashif Ahmad Khan, who runs MyRahat.com, an online shopping portal. “We spend a lot on Eid days and that’s the biggest loss,” he added.

In a tweet, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit.
